LA is bigger than Chicago? How? In terms of area or population? It certainly doesn't have the big city feeling like New York or Chicago! Probably more so because of the lack of skyscrapers in downtown.
Personally, I don't like the overabundance of Hollywood there. But Chicago is still the biggest financial center outside New York.
Don't know but the numbers don't seem to be doing enough justice to the city. The experience of being there is just so unique - the architecture, the skycrapers lining Lake Michigan, the food, the music and the stories dating back over a hundred years.
Probably, only New York can match it in as many ways. But I hope the city makes good use of what it has and catches up with the rest of the world. It has taken a bit of a backseat in the last decade or so. Would hate to see it go down as another Detroit.
I city that loves sports, food, music and culture, promotes modernity and preserves history cannot go wrong.
I saw pictures of buildings. The name "Rookery" comes from a previous building on the same spot which was a roosting spot for pigeons. The name stuck. There still are lots of pigeons in the city.
This place is my erudition pitstop on the internet :)and hey didn't the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport in Gerogia recently take away the title of the world's busiest airport from O'Hare?
Sudip ->
Very Well said ... the numbers cannot caputre the feel of the city! Its lakefront has been very well maintained. I think even the mayor deserves a lot of credit!!! He is so dedicated to making Chicago the greenest city, the cleanest city, with the cleanest water. The Millennium Park is also the mayor's idea! The best part is that though it has lot of high-rise structures; it has an OPEN feel to it ... and all that parks right in the centre of the city ... a plan conceived way back in 1909 by Daniel Burnham!
And ... I guess LA is larger than Chicago - areawise!
Anon -> Thanks !!!
Actually Rookery is a very interesting building ...
HOH- >
You're right!
The 2004 data from the "Airports Council International" declares Atlanta's "Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport" as the world's busiest passenger airport since 1998. This was mainly due to the federal government imposing flight caps at O'Hare to reduce flight delays.
However "O'Hare International" airport has a $ 6 billion modernization & expansion plan ... to revamp airport runway and to add new terminals .... So maybe soon to will reclaim its busiest airport title!
Btw, Chicago O'Hare took back the title from Atlanta in 2005 :D
There was a minor blimp because of the Olympics. All normalcy has been restored now! :D
Boeing shifted its commercial center to Chicago from Seattle this decade. Also, read, Midway held the title before WWII! And, that since 1990, Chicago has been doing good in terms of business and people!
Cheers!
Ohh really !!!??!!!
Thanks for that piece of information @ Sanity!
Good collection of trivia!
The deep dish pizza came in the 1940's. During the war of the 40's and people were forced to one-dish meals; that could satify their stomach and stretch their budget.
In such times deep-dish pizza with thick crust became popular.
The one story that is probably true is about a man named Sewell (maybe originally from Texas) who created the deep dish pizza in 1943 at his bar and grill, Pizzeria Uno. Deep dish pizza soon became popular and Chicago became known for creating it. Everyone, not just Italians adopted it as a 'Chicago' food.
The original Pizzeria Uno still exists at 29 E Ohio Street; 60611.
However what we find now is relatively thin crust pulled up high on the sides of a deep dish pan to encase the delicious ingredients.
The order the ingredients are placed on a Chicago style deep dish pizza is REVERSE to that of a regular pizza. Chicago style deep dish pizza is made with slices of mozzarella cheese that are placed directly on the dough. Then additional ingredients like mushrooms, onions and sausage are spread on top of the cheese. Sausage, it's the most popular pizza topping in Chicago! That's why sausage is spread on top of the cheese in a layer.
Gosh that second pic makes my head swim... I'm afraid of heights, you know, gives me vertigo...
Really??!!!!
then Chicago is not the place for you ....
I think Ramani was staying at a place [ Four Seasons] just opposite that building [Hancock Center] in the Maginificient Mile.
Wonderful as always. And yes O' Hare did reclaim its title back last year.
And as far as deep dish pizzas go I found Lou Malnati's sausage pizza even better than Uno's. Yummm...I'm definitely going back there when I go to Chicago this summer.
Will look this up before I visit. Nice to have a handy travelogue/info at hand!
Have responded to your question on my blog.
Oh, and also liked your post on jeans, among others!
Hmm...Chicago..

Thanks, Jyoti! That was fun!
